How does effective cleaning work in everyday life?

The topics of hygiene and cleanliness are more important than ever today as we face pandemics and waves of influenza.

Most people are now highly aware of this issue.

But many do not know how they can effectively remove dirt, bacteria and invisible pathogens from the areas where they are active.

You will learn here about a few things that you should keep in mind while you clean and the possible “contaminated” objects you may touch in your everyday life.

Practical, everyday cleaning tips

  • Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands with warm water and soap.
  • Your cleaning materials should be effective and be suitable for your surfaces. Use separate cleaning cloths for the kitchen and bathroom. By taking this step, you will prevent germs from spreading.
  • Wash your bed linens, underwear, towels and cleaning cloths at a temperature of at least 60 degrees C to kill bacteria. A hot rinsing cycle will also improve the hygiene of your washing machine.
  • Brushes and combs should be regularly cleaned with shampoo.
  • Please remember this: The technique, that is the form of mechanical cleaning being used, plays a much bigger role than the type and amount of the cleaning agent do. The rule of thumb is: “Less cleaning agent is more. It’s the technique that counts!”

Typical objects touched every day

1. Start of the day

Smartphone

You use your smartphone every day and repeatedly hold it in your hand throughout the day.

Your mobile is a rendezvous point for bacteria and germs. They will spread across the entire device as you swipe it and type on it. For this reason, you should regularly clean your phone.

Tip: Experts recommend that you use antibacterial sprays without alcohol or other strong ingredients when you clean your phone. You can buy them online or in health and beauty shops. But never spray the cleaning agent directly onto the display because the moisture could get into your phone. You can also use microfibre cloths to clean your mobile. Also remember to clean your smartphone cover.

Coffee machine

Bacteria frequently form inside coffee machines. You can take two hygienic steps to fight them: First, you should regularly run the machine’s cleaning cycle. Second, you should mix some vinegar essence with two cups of water, pour the liquid into the water tank and let it work for about 20 minutes. You can clean water boilers this way as well.

2. At work

On the way to work:

When waves of influenza or pandemics hit, some of us feel safer in our own cars than in public transportation and use these services only during emergencies.

The key to safe cars is a commitment to keeping their interiors clean. After all, the air and people introduce bacteria into the car all of the time. Keeping the interior clean is that much more important when the vehicle is used by more than one person.

Car (“gleaming exterior - grubby interior”)

The important point to keep in mind is this: When you think about cleaning your car, you have to consider something more than the parts that you touch during and after the trip. You also have to consider that the air your air conditioning blows into your car’s passenger compartment should be clean as well.

To remove invisible germs, bacteria and fungi from the air conditioning system, you will have to clean both the pollen filter box and the air conditioning vaporiser. The airco well® air conditioning cleaning system has been tested by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) and found to be allergy friendly. The Association of German Engineers recommends the regular use of this system.

You will find out here where you can have your air conditioning system cleaned with airco well® products in a certified service centre!

Remember to occasionally clean the fuel tank cap when you fill up your car. You should also wear gloves during the fuelling process to prevent germs and bacteria from being introduced to your vehicle.

On the job

A clean work area will enable you not only to work much easier and be more productive, but also to create a healthy, hygienic atmosphere. Why not clean the dust and dirt on your own desk? The more frequently you clean, the lower the risk of bacteria forming.

Company cafeteria

Please leave your place in the company cafeteria in cleanest-possible state to prevent bacteria from multiplying.

3. Leisure time – afternoons and evenings

Sports

Sport clothing should be washed regularly after use because bacteria form much faster in damp clothing. You should also thoroughly clean equipment before and after use.

At home: “Bacteria – the unwanted roommates”

Bacteria feel right at home in the living room, bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. Dinnerware on which raw meat was stored or cut should never be left out unwashed. It should be immediately rinsed with hot water after use.

Other things that should be regularly cleaned include:

the TV remote control, the telephone, light switches, window frames, bed linens, clothes, the kitchen hood, the sink, the refrigerator and shower curtains. Dirt, bacteria and germs that, in the worst case, could cause allergies can easily form here.

In addition to a clean personal environment, physical hygiene is an essential way to effectively fight grime, bacteria and invisible pathogens.
